Abstract

This study aims to analyze the response and adoption dynamics of farmers in building an integrated catfish agribusiness value chain through the use of cultivation wastewater as liquid fertilizer in Lasiana Village, Kupang City. The study population was all 15 catfish farmers in the study location, who were also sampled using the census technique to obtain an in-depth picture. Data were collected through a qualitative approach using semi-structured in-depth interviews, participatory observation and documentation. The results showed that most farmers have understood the value-added potential of waste as organic fertilizer, with 60% showing an enthusiastic attitude driven by cost-saving and environmental sustainability motives. However, the adoption of this technology faces significant challenges, such as limited technical processing knowledge, lack of tools, and concerns over the quality and safety of liquid fertilizer. On the other hand, support from the government, farmer groups and families creates an ecosystem that supports innovation. Implicatively, these findings underscore that the creation of sustainable circular value chains requires interventions that go beyond conceptual extension. There is a need for ongoing technical assistance that focuses on providing simple tools, practical application guidance, as well as tangible demonstrations that link waste recycling practices with real income generation from the sale of fish and agricultural products. Thus, this system integration has the potential to create cost efficiency, product diversification and competitive advantage for local catfish agribusinesses.
